Continuing Experimenting/Playing with Transfer Paints!!!

25th January 2014

I am finding Transfer Paints very challenging!!!

Took me 30 minutes sorting suitable fabrics ( I hope ) from my stash to play...

 ..tried the daffodil again....

..hope it looks better when stitched!

The colours are SO different when transferred.

A mixture of the red and yellow with some overlap...

...I don't know why the left side is paler, maybe I didn't heat it as much!!

Using paint left in the palette, I pressed the brush randomly on one side of the paper....

...folded and pressed...

..not enough paint so I blobbed yellow and red straight from the bottle, folded and pressed again..

..lovely and plenty of paint...

..the colours were so different and I tried really hard applying the heat!!

When I really looked at this I 'saw' a bowl of flowers so might try to stitch this impression.

I am determined to keep trying, it will not beat me!!

I think I may try adding a touch of black to tone down the colour but that is for another day.

I really need to stitch today.

PS
Any advice or help will be very gratefully received from anybody who has worked with Transfer Paints x

Gift for a New Baby and my Hand Made Book for Unit 6

24th January 2014

I have spent a very pleasant morning making a gift for a new baby! I found some pretty fabrics in my stash and decided to make a simple picture with a little hand sewing instead of machining......

...fabric cut to the size required, spotty  fabric was backed with Bondaweb and letters cut out...

..hand stitched in blanket and running stitch in a silk thread...

..framed and ready for posting!

So satisfying to complete a project in one sitting, helped by coffee of course!

My book making is quite another matter, mainly because all the processes need to dry out before the next step!

I stitched and gave my silk paper 3 coats of acrylic wax....

..next step was to cut the pelmet vilene, back, front and spine..

...then glued onto paper...

..this was pressed under a pile of books and left overnight.

I used some paint I had left from printing to coat paper for the inner book cover...

and left to dry.

Inner cover glued in place..

...finished book..

..pleased with the result, just hope it is big enough!!!

Tomorrow I have to psyche myself up for the 3rd attempt at Transfer Paints, watch this space!.

Experiment 2 with Transfer Paints!

22nd January 2014

I think I am going to be practising a great deal with these paints!!

I drew a daffodil on paper....

..painted with transfer paints...

..when dry ironed onto Lutradur...

..a better result but I must now do this on a man made fabric as I want to free machine and make a card for a friend who loves daffodils. I will have to go through my stash to find a suitable fabric as most of my fabrics are natural from when I was dyeing with Procion dyes.

As I have now started Unit 6 thought I better get my book made.

I made a large piece of silk paper using the iron method, sprayed it with 2 shades of Procion and when dry I printed with a wooden block and also the lino cut from Monday...

..coated this with acrylic wax to protect the paper..

..when dry spent time free machining in a variety of threads including silver...

..next another coat of wax.

Tomorrow I will hopefully finish the book.

I started the day smiling because...

..a beautiful rainbow!

First Experiment with Transfer Paints

21st January 2014

Look what I got this morning...

Transfer Paints

..I was like a child on Christmas morning and I just had to play straight away!!!

I painted a sample of each colour on a sheet of photo copier paper....

....then used up the rest of the paint from he palette.

I then had to wait for over 30 mins for the paper to dry!
(used this time to have a shower and get dressed!)

Next I decided to weave the two papers so cut in wavy lines for added interest...

...now for the exciting bit!

I chose some cotton fabric (a mistake as the paints transfer better onto manmade fabrics!!)...

..the colours are much more vibrant when transferred....

..not sure whether I ironed for long enough or because it is cotton fabric but the result was disappointing!

I will try on Lutradur next time.

Lino Printing

20th January 2014

I have had a really great day!

This afternoon I went on a FREE course in Blackpool for lino printing.
Linzi, the artist, had secured a grant from the Arts Council to fund courses in Blackpool for January.
It is held in an empty shop.....

...work displayed on the walls was from previous workshops and Linzi's work.

We were shown how to transfer a design onto the lino and how to use the tools then we set to work...

My design, a hydrangea petal...

..roughly cut out...

Linzi is in the red coat giving advice and help..

..a blob of blue on glass...

..rolled out ready for printing...

...pressing the lino cut...

..after pressing...

...brilliant result!

My petals in blue...

..and red. They look different because the top one was pressed on the glass where there was just a little paint, on the right one I rolled the roller over the lino and the other was when the paint on the glass was quite thick.

Other samples from the class.

A great afternoon and I am going next week for monoprinting-life is good!!!

On the way home I called into Smiths and bought this magazine....

...and when I arrived home a friend had left me this gift...

..a BRILLIANT end to my Monday!!!

I am hoping my Transfer Paints will arrive tomorrow.....
